'Troubled' UT Student Stabs 3, Killing 1, With 'Large Bowie-Style Hunting Knife'

Here's what we know about suspect Kendrex White.

Panic struck University of Texas at Austin campus on Monday afternoon when a student wielding a knife stabbed four men. One student died from his wounds while three others sustained different injuries. The stabbings took place outside the Gregory Gym on campus.

Police identified the suspect as 21-year-old Kendrex J. White, whom they say carried a “Bowie-style” hunting knife. Shortly after his stabbing spree, White was cornered by police. He was then placed into custody, reported KXAN.

The victim who died was identified by the Graham Independent School District as 19-year-old Harrison Brown. This year, Brown joined the university acapella group. Classmates said Brown was “an inspiration to everyone around him.”

The three other students injured during the attack suffered from varying injuries. Two of the men were released from the hospital on Monday evening. There has still been no released motive for the attack; however, investigators are looking into White's history.

  • According to the UT Directory, White is a junior studying biology

One of White’s classmates, Korbin Springer, said the suspect has been missing class recently. Springer added that when he returned, he seemed depressed.

“This is not something I think he would’ve done a month ago,” Springer told KXAN. “He was a completely different person showing up in class and then now doing something like this.”

  • After police were notified of the stabbing, they tracked down White and tackled him to the ground

  • White remains in custody and police have not yet released a motive for the stabbings

University Police Chief David Carter said he is “not aware of” any connection between White any specific groups that could take responsibility for the attack.

“He has basically just been taken into custody. He is obviously going to be interrogated as part of that process,” Carter told reporters at a press conference. “What information he’s providing detectives at this point, both the UTPD and APD homicide detectives I do not know. … He is currently being interrogated at this point and it will probably be awhile before we actually charge him.”
