#BlackGirlMagic: See Lupita Nyong’o and Aja Naomi King's Big Magazine Win
Every November for the past 23 years, Elle Magazine pays homage to the beautiful and electrifying ladies who light up the big screen in their "Women in Hollywood" issue. And so it shouldn't be a surprise that both actresses Lupita Nyong’o and Aja Naomi King were picked to grace this year's cover.
Nyong’o, who also scored the coveted cover of October’s Vogue issue, stuns in a Black embellished Dolce & Gabbana jumpsuit and braids.
The Queen of Katwe actress dished about being successful despite an agent telling her that her skin was "too dark for African television."
“I grew up with a very limited mirror of myself. I watched a lot of TV, but the people on it were always light skinned. And now I have a platform that takes me into people's houses and onto the pages of their magazines,” the Oscar winner said.
King, who can be seen in both How to Get Away With Murder and The Birth of a Nation, is flawless in a gray and white polka-dot Calvin Klein dress.
The newcomer shared how working with inspiring people inspires her to be a stronger artist.
“I want to write, I want to direct, I want to produce — I want to inhabit what I think it means to fully be an artist. I always wanted to do that, but I didn't think I had the tools. Now I look at Viola [Davis] and I look at Nate [Parker] and I look at Shonda [Rhimes] and it's like, You just do it. You just begin, you know?”
The ladies join six others, including Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams, Anna Kendrick, Felicity Jones, Kathy Bates and Helen Mirren, who also have their own covers.
Nyong’o and King aren’t the only Black women that Elle has honored for their coveted Women in Hollywood issue. Past cover girls include Zoe Saldana, Naomi Harris, Kerry Washington, Ava DuVernay, Octavia Spencer and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
The November issue of ELLE hits newsstands on October 18.
