Shyne Says He Was the 'Fall Guy' In The 1999 Nightclub Shooting In New York York With Diddy
Shyne is sharing his truth.
The former Bad Boy rapper, whose real name is Moses Michael Levi Barrow, is telling his side of the story regarding the 1999 shooting at a club in New York that involved Diddy, Complex reports.
During a recent interview with Channel 5 Belize, Barrow was asked if Diddy’s legal issues are tarnishing his image now that he’s the subject of several accusations of sexual misconduct, assault, and other charges.
“It opens wounds when you hear, you know, the victim saying that, you know, it was Diddy that shot her,” Shyne told the outlet. “And that was triggered by a lawsuit from a producer [Lil Rod] that produced on the Love Album who is making accusations and in those accusations, he says that the gentleman confessed to the shooting.”
The producer Shyne referred to is Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, who also accused Diddy of sexual assault and harassment before Diddy’s homes in New York and Miami were raided for his alleged connection to sex trafficking.
Shyne, now the leader of the Belize United Democratic Party, went on to say that he was consistent throughout the entire ordeal and still maintained his innocence more than two decades later.
“Everyone knew all along that I was the fall guy,” Barrow said. “But my political enemies and, you know, detractors try to make me into, you know, this criminal. But everyone knew that I was a young kid that took the fall. Everyone knew that, that was the story. I’m just saying that I maintained my innocence all this time.''
“I didn’t get into who did what, but the victim is telling you who did what and I understand that there are other witnesses. Fragments were never removed so there was never any forensic testing to say who it was, but the victims are vindicating me. Witnesses are vindicating me, but I have moved on, I am not trying to relive that,” he continued.
“And so, I am appreciative of whatever contributions that Diddy has made to help the people of Belize. I wish him well and I pray for him, and I pray for the alleged victims. And if it is true, may justice be served, and if it’s not, it’s a tragedy because a global icon would have been destroyed.”
The infamous incident took place on Dec. 27, 1999—Shyne, who was 21 years old at the time, reportedly fired his gun after a fight broke out at Club New York in Manhattan. Shyne was in the club with Diddy and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez. According to reports, a scuffle took place when Diddy allegedly knocked a drink out of a man's hand, after someone in the club tossed money in Diddy’s direction.
Three bystanders were shot during the melee.
Diddy left the scene with Lopez and law enforcement officials discovered a concealed weapon in their vehicle after tracking them down. He was arrested for gun possession and the charges against Lopez were eventually dropped.
In 2001, Diddy was acquitted of all charges.
Shyne was convicted of assault, and sentenced to 10 years in prison
In March, Natania Reuben claimed that Diddy shot her in the face at the club that night and wants the case reopened.
“I literally watched them pull out the guns. I had a clear point of view. I mean, for God’s sake, I got shot in my nose. I was facing them directly. I watched everything occur and have described it, vehemently to all parties involved,” Reuben said. “I have nine bullet fragments remaining in my face.”
