Center Stage with Taye Diggs: A Fun-Filled Ride on VH-1's 'Celebrity Squares'

Taye Diggs shines as a square on 'Celebrity Squares,' but Diggs' journey extends beyond the TV screen.

Every week, VH-1's "Celebrity Squares" transforms TV screens into entertainment playground, courtesy of host DC Young Fly and a star-studded panel. Among the luminaries gracing the center square is Taye Diggs, a seasoned actor celebrated for his reign over the realm of Black romantic comedies since the '90s. Let's delve into five of his adored roles, the heartbeats of countless fans."

Taye Diggs on Social Media

Social media technically isn’t a role, but Taye Diggs has become a bright light in the digital space amid the rampant toxicity. Taye Diggs first established his presence on social media when he began to follow as many people as possible on Twitter. It got to a point where the Taye Diggs follow was to be expected, and when interviewed about it, his motive was simple. His publicist told him to follow people, and so he did. But what was also unexpected was how impactful his social media expansion would be. He has proven himself to be quite the natural comedian by way of snippets from his actual life, and it’s something to look forward to when logging on to social media.

The Best Man

We first met Taye Digs as messy Harper Stewart in 1999’s “The Best Man.” The tradition continued in “The Best Man Holiday” and then on the TV series “The Best Man: The Final Chapters.” While Tay Diggs probably (hopefully) isn’t this messy in real life, his portrayal of the character’s flawed, neurotic, but well-meaning blunders is convincing and entertaining.

The Wood

Taye Diggs played the adult version of Roland on “The Wood,” and when we meet Roland, he’s in a drunken stupor on his wedding day, unsure if he wants to go through with the big day. It worked out in the end, but there’s something about Taye Diggs and these flawed Lothario roles that work well.

Brown Sugar

Taye Diggs played a record producer named Dre, who was secretly in love with his childhood best friend. But, of course, he married another woman instead. It was a woman he had only known for six months and had nothing in common with. Eventually, he realized who his one true love was, but again, it was another flawed Lothario role that was oddly endearing. The record producer part was questionable, but we’ll let it slide.

The Come Back

In “The Come Back,” Diggs plays Jeff Murray, a husband who is reluctant to move back to Atlanta after his wife gets the job of a lifetime there. It’s not the usual Lothario role for Diggs, but it’s cute that he stars alongside his girlfriend, Apryl Jones.
