Suspect Arrested in Murder of Auburn Football Player Jakell Mitchell
A suspect in the Sunday morning shooting death of Auburn University football player Jakell Mitchell has been arrested.
According to Alabama.com, the Auburn Police Department arrested and charged Markale Deandra Hart, 22, with murder in connection of the redshirt freshman tight end. The motive behind the shooting is currently being investigated and Hart is being held on $150,000 bond. Mitchell, 18, was found dead at an apartment complex near the University's campus.
Police were called to the Tiger Lodge apartment complex at 12:25 a.m., according to reports, when they saw Mitchell in the passenger seat of a vehicle, bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center's emergency room, where he was pronounced dead. Eerily, Tiger Lodge was the same apartment complex in which two former Auburn football players were shot and killed during a party back in June 2012.
News of Mitchell's death has rattled the Auburn football community.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jakell's family and friends. Auburn encourages those in need to contact the Division of Student Affairs," Auburn University tweeted.
Mitchell's high school football coach at Opelika High School, Brian Blackmon, also tweeted: "The sadness I feel right now is overwhelming. My hope is in Jesus. My prayers are that Mitchell family will find Peace in Him also."
