2023 NAACP Image Awards: Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union-Wade Receive Presidential Award
On Saturday night (Feb. 25), Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union-Wade were honored with the Presidential Award at the 2023 NAACP Image Awards. The award is given to those who are not only changemakers but those who believe in community service and advocating for others.
"We don't stand up here alone, as we know, it takes a village and a community. As we stand up today, as two people who work tirelessly to have resources and access. As two people willing to use our microphones in what we believe and what other families are going through," Dwyane Wade said.
The retired NBA superstar went on to sing the praise of his daughter Zaya Wade and how well she's handled the bigotry and major criticism when it comes to the transgender population.
Union-Wade took a stand when it comes to the Black community and urged it to embrace LGBTQ rights.
"Will we fight for some, or will we fight for all of our people," she emphatically asked.
Over the last several years, the Wades have been using their power to promote positive social change. They have worked tirelessly through the Wade Family Foundation to provide support and aid to marginalized populations in need. They passionately believe in the need of furthering racial justice and LGBTQ equality and have been enthusiastically advocating for these causes.
The couple has been very active in promoting LGBTQIA+ rights and providing assistance to the LGBTQ community. They have raised donations for GLSEN, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing school-based bullying and discrimination. Their initiatives have increased awareness of the difficulties encountered by the LGBTQ population and brought about a positive attitude shift toward them.
Union-Wade has been an ardent supporter of numerous issues near her heart on a personal level. She has contributed financial assistance and her voice to groups including the Van Ness Recovery House, Leap for Women, Out Nebraska, Deborah's Place, Harvest House, and Baltimore Safe Haven. She has been devoted to utilizing her status as a public figure to raise awareness about the organizations' efforts to assist marginalized areas.
