Diggy Simmons opened up about his J. Cole diss yesterday on L.A.-area radio station 99.1 KGGI. In the interview, the up-and-coming MC makes no apologies for dissing the Roc Nation rapper. He explains the situation as a matter of upholding his family name.
"No big story behind it," he said. "It was really just that my sister, over a year ago told me that he was saying he did this, that and the third with her you know because they went to the same college but they didn't even really know each other like that so it wasn't like that. She also told me that he subliminally also talked about her in a song called "Purple Rain," which was also false. So you know it was just like me sticking up for my family. That's all it really was and I didn't leak it like that.… It's like a little over a year old. I did that for the album last year in February when I first started recording the album."
As previously reported, a freestyle diss recorded by Diggy and aimed at Cole, "What You Say to Me," was leaked Sunday evening. The song is a response to several lyrical swipes Cole took toward the Simmons clan including Dig's eldest sister, Vanessa, throughout the past year.
In yesterday's interview Diggy confirmed that he had no intentions on ever releasing the old track. "I mean, I was going to put it out but I didn't feel like it was appropriate, but like I said, that's my sister over everything and that's how I felt."
Diggy's father, Rev. Run, took his son's side, tweeting "J Cole.. Puts out 2 records Dissing family & Diggy & nobody cared.. Some1 leaks a old Diggy record & there's a problem."
Diggy says that his father has no other issue with his own diss track for Cole. "He had already heard the track and he's like, the same thing, family over everything," Diggy shared. "That's your sister. He wasn't mad about it at all."

When asked if he was expecting a response from J. Cole, Diggy responded simply, "That's not really my focus." 

Diggy went on to discuss his excitement over the release of his debut album, Unexpected Arrival, which hit store shelves March 20.
