Damon Wayans Sr. And Damon Wayans Jr. Discuss ‘Poppa’s House,’ Dating Apps, And Today’s Age In Comedy

The father-son duo also shares who's the funniest of the Wayans.

The Wayans family has long been a powerhouse in Hollywood, shaping the comedy landscape with their signature blend of sharp wit, cultural commentary, and boundless creativity. From groundbreaking sketch shows like “In Living Color" to beloved sitcoms like“My Wife and Kids" and “The Wayans Bros.,” their influence spans generations, redefining Black comedy on both the big and small screen. With a legacy of producing iconic films such as “Scary Movie," “White Chicks,” and “Don’t Be a Menace,” the Wayans name is synonymous with laughter, innovation, and trailblazing storytelling. Their accolades include NAACP Image Awards, Emmy nominations, and a lasting impact on the entertainment industry that continues to inspire up-and-coming comedians and actors.

The dynasty’s latest sensation, “Poppa’s House,” brings Damon Wayans Sr. and Damon Wayans Jr. together in a hilarious, heartfelt sitcom that artfully blends comedy with real-life father-son dynamics. The series offers a fresh take on modern family life, tackling generational differences with impeccable comedic timing and warmth. Longtime Wayans collaborator Essence Atkins and rising star Tetona Jackson—who shined in BET’s “Boomerang”—round out the talented cast, making Poppa’s House a must-watch. The show delivers laugh-out-loud moments and highlights the evolving nature of family relationships, proving once again why the Wayans family remains a driving force in entertainment.

Damon Wayans Jr. beams with pride when talking about his daughter, Amara, joining Poppa’s House. “I love how much Amara respects the craft – how much she puts into her performances. I knew she would crush it, and I’m happy she’s able to play with me and my dad on screen this season,” he shares. “I know my pops is serious about having fun, so I try to tell Amara to do the same thing.”

Damon Wayans Sr. clarifies that while the Wayans family embraces nepotism, it still comes with expectations.

“We made her audition for the role – one thing about the Wayans family is there’s nepotism, but you have to earn it to an extent,” he says with a smirk.

On the series, Poppa dives into the dating world this season, experimenting with a dating app, a new attitude, and even a fresh hairdo. If Damon Wayans Sr. had to create a dating profile, he knows exactly what it would take to turn heads.

“Well, first, I’d have to make sure my shirt is off to see my abs. I’d probably dye my beard black because I want them to think I’m a catch. Then, I might have some R&B music playing in the background to catch their attention,” he laughs.

When it comes to the title of the funniest Wayans, Damon Jr. has no hesitation.

“I would say my dad honestly – when it comes to stand-up and writing, it’s him for sure.”

Comedy has evolved in the digital age, offering opportunities and limitations, especially for Black comedians. Damon Jr. sees the bright side but acknowledges room for growth.

“To me, live comedy is still thriving, but the platforms that we have, we need to work on that and have more for sure.” On the other hand, his father believes the biggest shift is in the mindset of comedians today. “Everyone is so concerned with being the GOAT of comedy, where I come from a time where people wouldn’t have to say they were the GOAT because GOATs don’t talk,” he says. “Right now, we have to come together even in comedy so we can keep that voice alive and not have it squashed.”
