Jaleel White Reflects on Turning Down ‘Family Matters’ Reboot

The actor emphasizes the importance of preserving the show’s unique legacy.

Jaleel White recently revealed why he passed on the idea of a “Family Matters” reboot despite Netflix’s interest following the success of “Fuller House.”

In a promo clip for his memoir, Growing Up Urkel, White shared how the opportunity came about and why he ultimately didn’t feel it was the right fit. "Somewhere around 2013, 2014, I was approached by one of our former producers that Netflix had interest in doing a reboot of ‘Family Matters’ on the heels of ‘Fuller House’ having done so well. And that didn't make any sense to me," he said.

White explained his hesitation, emphasizing that “Family Matters” was unique and shouldn't mimic the path of another show. "I didn't feel that it was right for us to have to copy what ‘Full House’ had done to fit inside someone's business model to capture the magic that made our show make sense," he added."What I imagine for any reboot effort would be inspired by what really happened. How ‘Family Matters’ came to pass is actually a greater story than what was made up inside the show."

Reflecting on his time as Urkel, the 47-year-old shared how the show evolved unexpectedly to make him its central character. "The show was never intended for me to be the star," he said, adding that his experience of "growing up on a studio lot and in public school at the same time" was a story worth exploring in its own right.

However, one of White’s former executive producers didn’t agree with his perspective. "That person told me that no one has interest in my 'memoirs,'" White revealed. Still, he remained confident in his story. "But here we are 12 years later, and I think there's some people that might be interested in those memoirs," he concluded.

“Family Matters” first aired on ABC from Sept. 22, 1989, to May 9, 1997, before moving to CBS for its ninth and final season from Sept. 19, 1997, to July 17, 1998. The show centered on the Winslows, a middle-class Black family in Chicago, Illinois. Midway through the first season, Steve Urkel (played by White), the Winslows' nerdy neighbor, was introduced as a one-time character but quickly became the breakout star and the show's central figure. The cast included Reginald VelJohnson, Jo Marie Payton, Telma Hopkins, Darius McCrary, and others.
