Tina Knowles On How She Inspired Beyoncé’s Shoutout On ‘Savage Remix’
Tina Knowles Lawson is now admitting she was a bit confused at first when she heard her daughter Beyoncé shoutout on Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage Remix.”
When Megan dropped her Beyoncé-approved “Savage Remix”, the single was an instant hit with her legion of fans, rocketing from No. 14 to No. 4 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
Embedded on the hotly anticipated release was some verses from Yoncé, and the reminder that she got it from her momma, rapping “I'm a boss, I'm a leader / I pull up in my two-seater / And my mama was a savage / N***a, I got this s**t from Tina.”
On Thursday (April 7), Lawson appeared on CBS News to discuss her and Beyoncé’s COVID-19 relief efforts in Houston. During the interview, she was asked about her thoughts on the “Savage” line and whether it was about her philanthropy.
“It is funny because I wrote her and told her how proud I was because she and Jack Dorsey teamed up and they helped a lot of organizations during this COVID crisis. I wrote her a text to tell her how proud I was of her and that she was doing God's work. She said to me, ‘Yeah, because I want to be like you,’” Knowles Lawson recalled. “It was the best compliment that I really got that message across to [Beyoncé and Solange] as kids.”
“As far as the ‘Savage’ is concerned, you know it is funny because people started texting me and calling me a savage, and I was like why are they calling me a savage? I wasn’t sure what it meant!” she laughed. “Then someone sent me a video of this girl doing a dance and I was like, Oh, it is something good!”
“You know, when [Beyoncé] was in middle-school, I used to drive up in my top-down to pick her and Kelly up from school,” she shared. “And, the kids would say ‘Oh your mom is really cool, so that’s where she got it from.”
