Denzel Washington’s ‘The Equalizer 3’ Makes Box Office History During Labor Day Weekend
Denzel Washington continues to make movie history with The Equalizer 3, which is on track to become the second-highest opening weekend of all time for a film released Labor Day weekend.
The film pulled in $34.5 million from Friday to Sunday and is expected to top $42 million by the end of the holiday, according to Entertainment Weekly. Its $26.1 million international take through Sunday made for a three-day global box office of $60.6 million.
Marvel Studios’ Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hangs on to Labor Day top spot, having netted $94.6 million over the holiday weekend in 2021.
The Equalizer 3 sees Washington’s Robert McCall go head-to-head with the Italian mafia. He reunites with his Man on Fire co-star Dakota Fanning and director Antoine Fuqua, who has led the franchise since its inception.
The film is marketed as the last of a trilogy, but Fuqua hasn’t completely written off the possibility of a fourth film.
"I believe this would be it. We've both talked about it that way. But you never know!" Fuqua said. "Obviously, if [Washington] wanted to do another one, I would as well, but I don't see it. But who knows?"
The action flick knocked Barbie in second place; the Greta Gerwig-directed juggernaut is expected to gross $13.8 million over the holiday weekend.
DC Studios’ superhero flick Blue Beetle took a bow with $9.4 million, Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story grossed $8.5 million and Oppenheimer is expected to round out the pack with $7.2 million over the long weekend.
