Denton County Texas Commissioner Injured, Husband Killed in Home Attack
Denton County, Texas, Commissioner Bobbie J. Mitchell was critically injured, and her husband, Fred Mitchell, was killed in a stabbing at their Lewisville home early Monday morning, according to reports. Their 23-year-old grandson, Mitchell Blake Reinacher, has been arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to police reports, a 911 call was made just before 4 a.m. on April 21, reporting a person with a knife and sounds of a struggle. Responding officers found Reinacher standing over Fred Mitchell, who had sustained severe stab wounds to the chest. Bobbie Mitchell was also found with stab wounds, including one to the heart, and was transported to the hospital for emergency surgery. She is currently in stable condition and expected to recover.
Bobbie Mitchell informed police that her grandson had broken into their home, stated his intent to kill them, retrieved a knife from the kitchen, and attacked them in their bedroom. Reinacher had been living with his grandparents since late 2024. Investigators found a bloodied 6-inch serrated steak knife with a blade bent at a 90-degree angle at the scene, indicating the force used in the attack.
Reinacher is being held in the Denton County Jail on a $600,000 bond. He has declined to speak with investigators.
Bobbie Mitchell has been a prominent figure in Denton County politics, serving as the first Black mayor of Lewisville from 1993 to 2000 and as a county commissioner since 2000. She was appointed to the Commission on State Emergency Communications by Governor Greg Abbott in 2023.
The community has expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Denton County Judge Andy Eads held a moment of silence during a commissioners' meeting, and Governor Abbott extended condolences, thanking first responders for their swift action.
