Barack Obama Celebrates 'Suitgate' Anniversary by Comparing Iconic Tan Suit to Kamala Harris' DNC Look
Barack Obama commemorated the 10th anniversary of his infamous fashion moment by highlighting the latest tan suit wearer.
On Wednesday (Aug. 28), the former president took to his Instagram page to compare himself and Kamala Harris in tan suits. “How it started. How it’s going,” he wrote as the caption. “Ten years later, and it’s still a good look!” and included a link to a voter registration site.
On August 28, 2014, Obama held a live press conference to discuss the possibility of escalating the U.S. military response to ISIS in Syria. For the event, he wore a tan suit—an unusual choice for him at the time, and it quickly became a topic of significant media attention, with debates over whether it was appropriate for such a serious discussion. The controversy, often humorously called "suitgate," dominated the news and talk shows for days.
Obama wasn’t the only person to poke fun at the incident. "Ten years ago today: President Barack Obama appeared at a White House press conference wearing a tan suit. A TAN SUIT," CIA official and presidential briefer David Priess wrote humorously on X. "This was, and remains, the greatest scandal in presidential history—if not in all of human history."
