In a surprise move Tuesday, the Jacksonville Jaguars cut quarterback David Garrard after four seasons as a starter and just days before the season opener.

The Jaguars will go with journeyman Luke McCown against the Tennessee Titans.

Garrard had not performed well in preseason but the Jaguars didn’t seem to have a better option on their quarterback staff at this point. Rookie Blaine Gabbert is the quarterback of the future, but for now the ball is in the hands of a 30-year-old quarterback who is 1–6 as a starter and has thrown nine touchdowns versus 10 interceptions.

"[Garrard] just couldn't get it going," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said to ESPN.com. "I had met with him a couple of weeks ago and brought him in and said, 'Hey, listen, you're my guy. I need you to get it going.' He was given every opportunity. He was somewhat apologetic that he wasn't able to deliver."

Garrard, 33, was in the fourth year of a seven-year contract he signed in 2008 that was worth $62.98 million. He was set to make $7.975 million this season.

In 2010, Garrard had an up and down season, throwing for 2,734 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. His touchdowns and interceptions were both career highs.
