Ben Crump: Will Smith, George Clinton Raise $10 Million For Miami Law School Named In Honor Of The Civil Rights Lawyer
St. Thomas University in Miami is now dedicated and named after famed civil rights attorney, Ben Crump. Not only is Crump the first practicing attorney to have a school named in his honor, he’s receiving some serious financial backing for the Benjamin L. Crump College of Law.
According to TMZ, Will Smith, George Clinton and Bishop T.D. Jakes joined forces to raise $10 million for the new law school.
According to the Miami Herald, Smith made a surprise appearance to honor Crump during the Wednesday (Feb. 8) ceremony in Miami Gardens, Florida.
“There are very few people in the world with a heart like this,” Smith said while hugging Crump. “So, it is with my deepest honor and pleasure to be here to support, show love and give congratulations on this historic honor.”
Smith, alongside Crump and St. Thomas University President David A. Armstrong locked arms and shared all smiles during the ceremony.
The college is dedicating the law school to Crump to honor his attorney legacy and their move toward encouraging “bridge-building among the legal profession, law enforcement and our communities,” Armstrong said.
Crump has an extensive resume of working on high profile cases related to civil rights. He’s represented the families of Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and most recently, Tyre Nichols.
During his speech at the ceremony, Crump notes the significant progress that has been made along the way to equality, but says there’s a lot more road to cover.
“The future change makers and civil justice leaders that will matriculate from St. Thomas will soon be passed the torch from today’s civil rights icons and I have every confidence that they will meet the moment.”
