White Gunman Opens Fire on 7 People of Color, Killing 1, and Police Haven't Classified the Shooting as a Hate Crime

Peter Selis held a beer while shooting victims at a pool party in an affluent San Diego community.

During a pool party at San Diego apartment complex, a man opened fire on seven guests on Sunday around 6 p.m. Four women and three men — all people of color — were transported to a local hospital. One woman has died from her injuries while the others remain in treatment. The victims' injuries range from minor to critical.

The shooter, identified as 49-year-old Peter Selis, was shot dead by San Diego police, who were called to the scene. When three officers approached Selis, he reportedly pointed his weapon at them, leading them to shoot.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman and Mayor Kevin Faulconer spoke at a news conference following the shooting.

"This is truly a horrific act of violence that took place here today," San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said at a news conference. "Our entire city, all of our thoughts and prayers, all San Diegans' thoughts and prayers, are with the victims and their families tonight."

The La Jolla Crossroads apartment complex, where the shooting took place, resides in an affluent San Diego neighborhood. Selis is believed to be a resident of the building. Police have not mentioned a motive for the shooting.

  • According to witnesses, Selis appeared relaxed as he opened fire

"We could see the shooter sitting there with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other," one resident told KGTV.

  • One witness told NBC 7 Selis was invited to the pool party. They said Selis walked in the pool and was greeted by the resident celebrating their 50th birthday. When Selis was greeted by the celebratory resident, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot his neighbor in the stomach, said the witness. He then continued to shoot until he ran out of bullets.
