Interview: Sam Jay Talks About Her First Job Before Comedy Stardom, Her Process of Creating Jokes On Stage, And More
Sam Jay is easily becoming one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood. From her series on Peacock Bust Down to appearing in the Netflix film You People, with an ensemble cast including Eddie Murphy, Nia Long, Lauren London, and Jonah Hill, the 41-year-old is vastly climbing the rankings as one of the most sought-after comedians.
Jay has been a writer on Saturday Night Live since 2017, becoming the first openly Black lesbian writer on the series and the second to be a part of the franchise. Already working with HBO, the network decided to give the comedian her special called Salute Me Or Shoot Me, which debuted on September 23rd.
In a conversation with BET.com, the actor relives one of her earlier jobs before stardom as a music manager.
“When I first got to Atlanta, I was doing a bunch of odd jobs and then I met these guys who were into music,” she began.
“We gelled, had great energy together, and began managing this artist. It was informative, but I learned a lot about myself as a leader and someone who is willing to take risks.”
Jay continued, elaborating on what made her take a risk and pursue standup full-time.
“I was tired of how my life was,” she said.
“I didn’t feel like I was living up to my potential and I was at this dead end job, at least for me. I knew this couldn’t be the end of my story and I had to try something. I always was interested in comedy and was the funny one in the room, making folks laugh so I always wanted to try it.”
She then continued, discussing her process for creating her punchlines on stage.
“At first, I was going on stage and cracking jokes while writing stuff down here and there,” she said.
“In the beginning, I thought about funny things about things like the Ninja Turtles or random, funny thoughts. You throw things against the walls and see what sticks.”
