Robert Griffin III Apologizes For Saying Racial Slur On Monday Night Football
Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III apologized after fumbling his words on Monday Night Countdown.
During the Dec. 12 pregame show, the ESPN analyst was discussing the Philadelphia Eagles’ victory over the New York Giants on Sunday and used a racial slur while defending Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts.
“People said that Jalen Hurts couldn’t get it done. He could not break from the pocket. He’s not the quarterback of the future. I think he proved all those jigaboos wrong,” Griffin commented to a national audience.
The Heisman Trophy winner’s casual use of the word “jigaboo,” an “insulting and contemptuous term for a Black person,” according to Merriam-Webster, raised eyebrows. A video clip of Griffin’s remarks went viral.
Griffin later explained that he misspoke and apologized.
“Yooooo, Definitely need to clarify this. THIS IS NOT WHAT I MEANT TO SAY. Was trying to say ‘those Bug-A-Boos’ in reference to haters and doubters,” he tweeted.
Griffin joined ESPN in 2021 as a college and NFL analyst for the sports network. In their deal, the former Washington Commanders quarterback and ESPN mutually agreed to part ways if Griffin gets another chance to play football.
