Casting News: Jaden Smith Returns for Karate Kid 2
The Karate Kid (2010) grossed nearly $350 million at the box office and made a star out of Will Smith's son Jaden Smith, so it comes as no surprise that a sequel is in the works. The younger Mr. Smith will return for The Karate Kid 2 along with his co-star, Jackie Chan.
Sony Pictures, the studio that owns the Karate Kid franchise, has also signed director Breck Eisner (The Crazies) to helm the film. No other casting announcements or plot details have been revealed as yet, but we should hear more as the start of production, scheduled for later this year, comes closer.
In other movie news, Ava DuVernay's civil rights-era drama, Selma, has landed some A-list talent. Carmen Ejogo will play Coretta Scott King in the film, opposite David Oyelowo's Martin Luther King Jr. The role should be déjà vu for Ejogo, who played King in the 2001 television film Boycott opposite her husband, Jeffrey Wright.
Selma follows Dr. King over the course of the landmark 1965 voting rights campaign. The film will be produced by Oprah Winfrey, Christian Colson and Brad Pitt.
