Lauryn Hill made good on her promise to release new music, dropping "Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)" on Friday (May 3). In a Tumblr post, Hill explained that she was forced to release the track in order to settle her tax debt.

"Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline," she wrote. "I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!"

With so much on her mind, the former Fugees singer unleashes a tsunami of inner thoughts over the accelerated beat, which is so aggressive at times that it demands more attention than the lyrical content.

Nonetheless, new music from the mother of six — who hasn't dropped a new song since 2010's "Repercussions" — is a sign that her tumultuous relationship with the music industry may be in better standings.

In addition to the release, Hill also made a last-minute payment to the IRS Sunday (May 5), one night ahead of her deadline. An attorney for the 37-year-old confirmed in an email to Reuters that the $1.8 million fee is "now fully paid," which means that Hill shelled out around $900,000 yesterday.

"Ms Hill has not only now fully paid prior to sentencing her taxes, which are part of her criminal restitution, but she has additionally fully paid her federal and state personal taxes for the entire period under examination through 2009," attorney Nathan Hochman said.

Late last month, Hill confirmed signing a deal with Sony Worldwide Entertainment, which will include the launch of her new label.
