Essence Honors Shonda Rhimes With Six Covers
Essence magazine is as happy as we are that Fall TV is finally upon us, and with it, Shondaland! Shonda Rhimes has taken over our Thursday night lineup with her hit shows Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder and Grey’s Anatomy. And the magazine not only honored Rhimes with a cover for its October issue, but also featured the Black actors starring in her various series with five other covers of their own.
Chandra Wilson of Grey’s Anatomy graces one of the covers and in her interview shares her biggest lesson learned from working with Rhimes.
“The thing I learned the most from her is not to be afraid of yes. I see her exemplify that all of the time in her personal and professional life,” she said.
Scandal star Kerry Washington also spoke highly of Rhimes's influence on her personal life and her career.
“To have Shonda as an example of somebody who is living life fully and attempting to bring the best version of herself to so many different areas of her life has been really powerful for me,” Washington said.
Viola Davis, of How to Get Away With Murder, also poses on a cover of her own while a selection of Grey’s Anatomy’s and How to Get Away With Murder’s casts are looking, as the cover line states, like “shining stars” on two more covers.
With such a group of characters all under her umbrella, you’d think drama would ensue much more often, but Rhimes assures us that they’re all one big family.
“I like the fact that we all get along,” Rhimes said. “I feel like you’re supposed to be happy at work. If you’re not happy, then you are in the wrong place.”
