Nicole Byer Says A Casting Director Asked Her To 'Be Blacker'

The Emmy nominee revealed all in a sit down with Laverne Cox

Comedian and actress Nicole Byer recently opened up an uncomfortable incident with a casting director.

During a pre-Emmy Awards special on E!, Byer told host Laverne Cox about an audition during her  20s, "Usually, they say 'sassy, more street, more urban.'"

She continued, "But I read [the line], and she was like, 'Can you be Blacker?' I was just playing a fairy. And she was like, 'Be as Black as you can be. If you go too Black, I'll bring you back.'"

Byer also revealed the casting director was white, saying, “She was white like the snow."

Byer has done pretty well just being her amazing self, despite casting directors. She made history as the first Black woman to be nominated for outstanding host for a reality or competition program for Nailed It!. This year, she received her third Emmy nomination for writing her special Nicole Byer: BBW (Big Beautiful Weirdo).
