Missy Elliott Reveals That She Wants To Remake Aaliyah’s Biopic, But Under One Condition…
It's been a week since her electrifying performance, but the world is still coming down from Missy Elliott’s big moment at the 2019 VMAs.
The Virginia legend has been blessing us with interviews these past couple of weeks and recently paid a visit to longtime DJ and radio veteran Sway Calloway’s radio show where she talked about everything from how the iconic VMAs show came together to being a woman in hip-hop and she even dropped some surprising news about a possible upcoming project based on Aaliyah.
Joined by hip-hop journalists Tracy G and Heather B, the quartet threw it back to Missy’s foundational Virginia roots that helped her ascend to the upper echelon of hip-hop. They touched on the emcee working in the trenches side by side with her brother-in-rhyme Timabaland to landing in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and her cultural impact being recognized with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Sway broached the subject of Black greats “preserving [their] own legacies” to tell their stories in their own words without outside influence during the 57-minute long conversation.
He pointed to Lifetime’s poorly received televised 2014 biopic on the late R&B icon that was mired in protests from both the late singer’s fans and her family, who did not sanction the production.
The femcee said she would be more than down to revisit her late friend’s story under one condition: the project has to be approved by Aaliyah’s family.
“When they are ready, I’m quite sure that we’ll do that and I respect that,” the Lose Control femcee said, adding that she would want to hold the reins on any potential production.
Although, she revealed that a film chronicling her career might be in the works.

“Oh yeah, I want to do my own myself,” Missy said with a cackle. Of course, the room was mad hype for any more details about a Misdemeanor film, but the “Supa Dupa Fly” hitmaker was tight-lipped about revealing anything else.
“We are talking,” Missy hinted, and left it at that. Continuing on that train of thought, Missy did say that she is doing more work in film and television, including co-producing a Clark Sisters biopic alongside Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah that is slated for a 2020 release.
