Is Drake Ready to Leave Cash Money?
Could Drake’s record-breaking new release bring him that much closer to leaving Cash Money? It's certainly a possibility.
According to Hip-Hop DX, If You're Reading This It's Too Late is technically his fourth album, meaning he's only under contract for one more LP.
The project was meant to be a free mixtape until “about two or three weeks ago” when the label stepped in.
"Originally we were in talks to release it for free...and have DJ Drama host and even make it an official Gangsta Grillz,” KP, who runs the mixtape downloading site Datpiff.com, told DX. “However the label was not in favor of that and they struck an agreement to release the project the retail route and it would count towards one of his albums.”
The compromise was releasing it on iTunes to count towards his contract. The Toronto rapper signed to Young Money/Cash Money in 2009, which is distributed by Republic Records.
“It was a mutual decision since he wanted to give it away. They [the label] said, 'Hell no,' not in those words, so they 'agreed' to do it this way as a middle ground and it would count towards his Cash Money deal album total. The label had zero input or creative control over If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.”
The New York Post reported earlier this week that Drizzy is in fact speeding through his reported five-album deal to jump ship from Cash Money.
