Amy Winehouse Album Sales Soar

UK singer sells 50,000 copies following her death.

After her tragic death this past weekend, interest in the music of Amy Winehouse has reached a sudden peak. Nielsen SoundScan reports that sales of Back to Black, Winehouse's last album, released in 2006, jumped to 37,000 in the days following her death. The numbers are good enough for the album to re-enter the Billboard Top 10 for the week, coming in at #9.
Winehouse's first album, Frank, which was relatively little-heard in the US, also received new attention, selling 7,600 copies over the last week. Factor in sales of other limited releases, such as a B-sides collection and a live album, and Winehouse sold over 50,000 albums this cycle. The vast majority of purchases were digital downloads.
Individually, Winehouse's singles, in which the 27-year-old often sung about love and personal drama with visceral honesty, have also fared well. Overall, the tracks spiked 2,000 percent with 111,000 sold last week. Her biggest hit, "Rehab," was unsurprisingly the best seller, with about 34,000 downloads.
A funeral was held for Winehouse in London on Tuesday (July 26) and attended by close friends and family. The singer was later cremated. The cause of death has not yet been identified, and toxicology reports could take between two and four weeks.
