Ted Nugent is ranting again. Speaking at the National Rifle Association conference last weekend, the aging rocker, who has stumped for the presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney, said, "If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year."  

He also urged everyone at the convention to recruit "everybody in your lives to clean house in this vile, evil, America-hating administration." Otherwise, he added, “we’ll be a suburb of Indonesia next year.”

Outraged by the noticeable silence from Romney’s camp, Democratic National Committee chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz started a online petition on Tuesday calling on Romney to denounce Nugent’s remarks. It follows similar attempts by Republicans last week to tie Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen to the Obama campaign after she famously said that Ann Romney “has never worked a day in her life” and is therefore unqualified to serve as a campaign surrogate on women’s economic issues.

“Threatening violence — or whatever it is that Nugent’s threatening — is clearly beyond the pale, but Nugent’s not the one running for president. The question is: Does Romney agree with him? Right now, we don’t know,” Wasserman Schultz said in the solicitation that included examples of “bad behavior” exhibited by other Romney supporters.

She’s right. Nugent isn’t the only conservative to make disparaging remarks about Obama. Former Vice President Dick Cheney, on the mend from a recent heart transplant, offered a pretty heartless description of the president at a Republican Party state conference in Wyoming last Saturday.

“He has been an unmitigated disaster to the country,” Cheney said, continuing what has become a trend among GOP lawmakers and pundits to talk about the president in terms that would set their teeth on edge if they were about one of their own.

In fact, Rosen has practically been driven underground for her remarks, which the president also condemned.
