R&B Singer Tweet Feels Female Artists ‘Have To Be Over-Sexualized In Order To Win’
After a nearly four-year long musical hiatus, R&B singer Tweet has returned with her latest single, “Neva Felt This Way.”
While she’s elated to put out new music, the Southern Hummingbird expressed her dismay towards how women in the music industry are coaxed to use their sex appeal to sell records. Tweet commented on the matter in a recent chat with Page Six.
“I feel like female artists have to be over sexualized in order to win in today’s music era,” she said to the publication. “Very over sexualized; very naked. All of those things which I’m not gonna do.”
Tweet recalled a recent photo shoot where she was surprised to find that the wardrobe was more revealing than what she’d anticipated. She said that the stylist “came with nothing but bustiers and leotards.”
“I was like, ‘No. Where did the clothing go?’” she recalled.Tweet would rather let her music speak for itself and serve a deeper purpose in the lives of others.
“I just want to be me and I want to be an open book so that I can help someone along the way," the singer-songwriter also said in a recent interview with Cheddar. “I’m here for whatever. Whatever God desires for me to do, that's what I wanna do and that means being open and honest.”
The R&B singer shared “Neva Felt This Way” was inspired by her own journey towards love. The single is expected to appear on Tweet's upcoming EP, which follows 2016's Charlene.
“It’s about me finally meeting someone that showed me what unconditional love is, and not only how to receive it but to also give,” she explained. “Even in this pandemic, you kind of question yourself. I had some self-reflection and I realized I met that person that really gave me a form of love that I never felt before...Some things, I thought I was healed from I wasn't.”
RELATED: Prayers Up: Singer Tweet Reportedly Hospitalized For Blood ClotsSpeaking of her musical hiatus, Tweet revealed that she took a break because she was tired of the music industry but then she got stuck in a contractual limbo after Elektra and Atlantic Records merged.
“I didn’t get the support that I needed and wanted,” she said. “I decided to get my spiritual act together and just take a moment to get myself together to come back to be free enough and comfortable enough and sure that I wanted to do this.”
Tweet is grateful for the fans who stuck by her through thick and thin, even in the midst of her brief health battle in 2016 when she was hospitalized after experiencing blood clots in her lungs and arms.“A lot of people thought I have been sick so I just want them to know I’m still here. I’m still moving, working and trying to put out some quality, timeless music,” she said. “I appreciate the love. Even in my hiatus, they were still there. Those are the people that really helped to want to come back with their encouraging words and support.”
