Solange Reveals Issues With Her Father: ‘Our Relationship Was Not Always Very Good’

"... I think I have a much clearer idea of the trauma that he experienced..."

R&B soulstress Solange graced the cover of Billboard for their March issue with a new-and-improved attitude toward Hollywood’s extensive entertainment industry.

On a more personal note, she explained that she also had a change of heart toward her father, music executive Mathew Knowles.

Solo discussed her critically-acclaimed A Seat at the Table project, which included skits of informational, yet intimate conversations about race and generational structure. She explained that using her father and her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, for these skits and getting them in the same room together was “a powerful moment.” She felt more understanding of her dad’s testimonies, though, especially considering that they helped her connect some pieces from her youth that affected their relationship.

“To sort out my adolescent and young adult years, there was still so much I needed to know because our relationship was not always very good,” she said. “It’s still very much a work in progress. But I think I have a much clearer idea of the trauma that he experienced and how it felt like it was then generationally passes on to me.”

The “Cranes in the Sky” singer said that her mother never held back on sharing her experiences while Solange grew up, so she was pretty familiar with her thoughts already.

Solo also discussed nabbing that “Mad” feature with Lil Wayne, a longtime friend of hers. There were three rounds of verses, she said, and he made sure to be especially transparent and authentic in his lyricism for the record.

“I cannot put into words how much I appreciated his willingness to project his truth in that verse and share something that was so vulnerable and so very real,” she said in praise of Weezy’s bars.
