Without Black People...There Would Be No Fashion Trends

Learn how impactful our Black history has been on the world.

From streetwear design to haute couture, Black designers have been making major moves, changing the status quo, and stacking up accolades for years. Black influencers, like Kerby Jean-Raymond, founder of Pyer Moss, who created his first fashion line when he was only 15 years old and Gen-Z model and activist Salem Mitchell, who has successfully expanded the industry standard of beauty, are informing the world on what’s hot and what’s not. But Black people have been influencing style way before social media ever existed.

We already know that historically mainstream fashion trends usually begin in the Black community but go without credit where credit is due. And those who mention the obvious copycat move, like media personality and writer Ivie Ani calling out Billie Eilish for culturally appropriating 90’s hip-hop influence and donning “hood girl 90s acrylics,” get slammed. All it means is that Black people still have to keep fighting for recognition and realizing that imitation is the highest form of flattery.

For this year’s Black History Month celebration, we want to reflect on just how much we’d miss out on if Black people did not contribute to the American fashion industry.
