Former Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent Comes Out

The 27-year-old says she is "queer."

In 2010, beauty queen Djuan Trent was crowned Miss Kentucky. In 2011, she finished in the top 10 of the Miss America competition. Now, she's made history by being the first national pageant contestant to come out as a lesbian.

On her blog, she wrote, "I have written and re-written and deleted and restarted this post more times than I care to share ... and after all of that I have finally realized: 'There ain't nothin' to it, but to do it.' So, here we go folks … I am queer." Queer is a word that was once considered offensive and is now an inclusive term that covers all facets of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community."

Trent continued, "I believe that my sexuality is my own... and this is not kindergarten, so I don't have to share it with anyone if I don't want to. But it's nice when you share, right?"
Djuan's coming out was sparked by her home state's ban on recognizing out-of-state same-sex marriages being ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge last month.
