Woah, Tay Zonday's Viral 'Chocolate Rain' Song is Now Ten Years Old

Talk about a throwback.

Viral videos have been playing a role in the success of musicians and entertainers for years now, but when it comes down to it, a strong case can be made that "Chocolate Rain" was one of the first to set the precedent of what the power of social media can do.

Tay Zonday, the deep-voiced YouTube sensation, first went viral a decade ago, and in honor of his iconic Internet legacy turning ten years old, the singer has recreated the song that first established the foundation for his massive social media following.

During an interview with BT News, Zonday reflected on experiencing the past decade being known for a song that was one of the first to get the meme treatment.

"I know I did about 30 radio interviews in the course of a week," Zonday shared, during the interview. "Three of the four major labels wanted to sign me. People contacted me to sing at their corporate parties, their kids’ Bar Mitzvahs, sign me to publishing deals. It was extremely overwhelming."

He also shared that he regrets giving away the song as a free download, especially considering he now has witnessed first hand the opportunities that can arise once a song goes viral online.

"If I had made smarter business choices when it was hot that would have been good, but I didn’t know," he admitted. "I think I’m very lucky to have content that is truly evergreen. I feel ‘Chocolate Rain’ is as relevant today as it was 10 years ago."
