Gregory McMichael, Convicted In Ahmaud Arbery Murder, Moved To Medical State Prison
Gregory McMichael, one of the three men convicted in Ahmaud Arbery’s murder, has been moved to a medical prison for unknown reasons.
According to WJXT, Georgia Department of Corrections records said McMichael, 66, was booked into Augusta State Medical Prison in Grovetown, Ga., on Aug. 23, 2022. Although it’s not clear why he was moved to a medical prison, at the time of his sentencing, his lawyer said McMichael had a history of stroke, heart disease, and depression.
On Feb. 23, 2020, McMichael, his son Travis McMichael and their neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan chased Arbery, 25, in pickup trucks while he jogged in their Brunswick, Georgia neighborhood. After cornering Arbery, a video recorded by Bryan showed Travis McMichael shooting him at close range. Despite the pursuers’ allegations, they thought Arbery was a burglar, authorities ruled he was unarmed and had committed no crimes.
A jury found the three defendants guilty in November 2021 of murdering Arbery. They were later sentenced to life behind bars in the state prison. McMichaels had been held at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison in Jackson, Ga.
In August 2022, the McMichaels requested a judge to divert them from state prison to federal prison, claiming they wouldn't be safe in a Georgia prison system. It’s unknown if Gregory McMichael’s transfer to Augusta State Medical Prison was due to the request.
Currently Travis McMichael and Bryan are still listed by the Georgia DOC as housed at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison.
