Sage the Gemini Talks Upcoming Collabs with Usher, J-Lo
Sage the Gemini has barely noticed how hard he's been working since his whirlwind success of a first album landed him atop the Billboard charts with infectious hits "Gas Pedal" and "Red Nose;" and he plans to keep the momentum going with a slew of big-name collaborations.
"I jumped straight past being a freshman so I don't have anything to compare it to to even tell me if it's hard or not to stay hot," Sage told BET.com while on the set of the video for Adrian Marcel's "2AM" remix. "Overall I just love doing music. People look at it like, 'Oh it's a job. I gotta go to the studio, right now.' No! If you love music it should be fun, so it's not hard. The only thing that's kind of hard dealing with is traveling a lot, not really getting to sleep a lot and the time zones have my head messed up for a little bit."
By now, Sage's unique brand of monotone is already recognized nationwide, but what a lot of people don't know is that the Bay Area singer is just as much a force behind the boards as he is on the mic.
"I did my whole [Gas Pedal] EP at my house — mixing, mastering, everything," noted Sage, adding that his work ethic is definitely getting noticed."Justin Bieber, Kelly Rowland want me to work with them. I produced and wrote for Trey Songz, they got me going to do something for J. Lo and Usher as well, and of course I'm working with P-Lo from HBK Gang, Tha Bizness and Clinton Sparks, Iamsu."
But he doesn't want to be the only producer behind the boards. "Hopefully we can get some Timbaland beats and Pharrell beats," he added.
Being from the Bay Area helps him to stay motivated, he said, and has inspired his sound. "We make the best out of everything, that's why we had that balance in the music. Like that party sound that's going around right now, it originated in the Bay Area," said Sage. "It's basically a lifestyle, like when the Hyphy movement was going on, that was just how we were living. I did it with my natural interest in R&B and I flipped it and I put them both together."
