Jerrod Carmichael Says Dave Chappelle Wanted a Public Apology After Criticizing His Anti-Trans Jokes
It’s safe to say that Jerrod Carmichael and Dave Chappelle will not be going on a comedy tour together anytime soon.
In an interview with Esquire, Carmichael explained what took place between them after Chappelle received backlash for his anti-trans jokes in his stand-up special “The Closer" on Netflix. Chappelle is “removed from what he’s talking about” and he is “smarter than that and deeper than that and has more interesting thoughts, said Carmichael.
Carmichael first criticized Chappelle for making anti-trans jokes in his stand-up specials in an interview with GQ in 2022.
“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That’s the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans shit? It’s an odd hill to die on,” Carmichael said at the time.
“Childish jokes aside, who the fuck are you?” Carmichael continued. “It’s just kind of played. But he’s choosing to die on the hill. So, alright, let him.”
In response, Carmichael said that Chappelle took offense to his remarks.
“He took it as, ‘F*ck Dave Chappelle,’ because he’s an egomaniac,” Carmichael explained. “He wanted me to apologize to him publicly or some sh*t.”
In response to his 2022 special “Rothaniel”, Carmichael said, “[Chappelle] referred to it as the bravest special for 1996. And it’s like, that’s a funny enough line, whatever, but I wonder if he gets the irony that the fact that you are mocking it even then is why it was hard.”
Carmichael’s comments about Chappelle follow the release of his new HBO show, “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” which debuted on March 29.
New episodes of the revealing show air on Fridays on HBO and its streaming service, Max.
