Rick Ross Says "Seeing Other Dudes Suffer" Inspired Him To Create "Idols Become Rivals"
Rick Ross made a lot of headlines yesterday with the release of his newest diss track “Idols Become Rivals.”
Within the track, the Maybach Music Group boss took shots at Birdman, which was the culmination of tension between the two label heads that had brewing for years.
Rozay sat down with BET Music’s very own Scottie Beam at the Harlem Wingstop for a new edition of Sound Bites. During their conversation, Ross’ new track came up. He says he recorded the song because he felt that people he respected were getting held back by Baby, among other reasons.
“It’s one of those things that when you’re a student and you admire someone from a distance and you get an opportunity to work with them and then you begin to see things that you don’t really respect or expect to see,” he explained. “And once you see it almost become the source to that downfall it’s really unfortunate. And when you see other solid dudes suffering at the same time that’s what make it even worse, that’s what made me wanna put it on wax.”
Rick Ross also weighed in on Remy Ma’s diss track “shETHER” and Nicki Minaj’s response to it. He says there’s no limit to how long an emcee should have to respond to a diss, but definitely believes Nicki needed to respond after what Remy dropped.
“By me being an author of mafia music you can never go too far,” he said. “I felt like we all know there’s been underlining tension there for years so I guess it came to a head when Remy put out a piece of work that really woke the streets up. To me, it wasn’t really about my opinion it was just the response to the streets and the streets pretty much put the ball in Nicki court where she had to respond.”
Regardless of what happens during this beef, Ross believes Minaj is still the queen of hip-hop, although he did say that Remy would be the contender for that role and she did “take her shot” with “Shether.”
Also during the sit down, Rozay said Lionel Richie and Rihanna are the artists he would most want to work with that he hasn’t been able to yet. He also reflected on the favorite features artists have given him over the years.
