Gay Former NBA Player John Amaechi Claps Back at Amar'e Stoudemire Over Homophobic Comments
Amar'e Stoudemire has been getting dragged left and right for saying that he would avoid a teammate if he found out the player was gay. In addition to many Twitter users making it open season on the former NBA All-Star and current Hapoel Jerusalem forward in the Israel Premier League, an important, retired NBA baller is clapping back at Stat, too.
John Amaechi, who came out publicly nearly four years after retiring from the NBA, wants "petulant man-children" like Stoudemire to quit talking and "stop flattering himself."
"These are serious times and we need serious people to lead important conversations, not petulant man-children spouting puerile prejudice," Amaechi told TMZ Sports on Wednesday upon learning about Stoudemire's controversial comments.
And Amaechi was just warming up on blasting Stoudemire, working in a Donald Trump jab next.
"There is already one too many of those holding court in the media, and the world is poorer for it," he continued. "Within the world of sport there are plenty of true role models — on and off the floor — whose words are carefully chosen to uplift and integrate society, not join Trump and his grinning cabal in their 'locker room banter.'"
Amaechi's stinging criticism came in reaction to Stoudemire telling Israeli website Walla Sport that he would go to extremes to avoid a gay teammate.
"I'm going to shower across the street, make sure my change of clothes are around the corner," Stoudemire said during an interview with the site. "And I'm going to drive — take a different route to the gym."
When the website asked the former NBA power forward if he was joking, he said, "I mean, there's always a truth within a joke."
Needless to say, Amaechi isn't even in the least bit amused.
"In these tumultuous times, these true role models are the men and women whose voices we need to disseminate to every corner, not a braying jackass making a desperate grab for relevance amongst a constituency destined for extinction," he continued ripping Stoudemire. "Lastly, could someone please tell this man to stop flattering himself. It’s embarrassing."
Sheesh!
Amaechi came out publicly in February 2007 after ending his five-year career in the NBA in 2003. That paved the way for Jason Collins to come out after the 2012-13 NBA season, as he would become the first publicly gay player to play in any of the four major North American sports leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB, and NHL) via a short stint with the Brooklyn Nets during the 2013-14 season.
