Barbering Through the Flames: Jayson Fernandez Uplifts Altadena After Eaton Fire

Despite losing his home, "Jayson the Barber" provides free haircuts and hope to wildfire survivors, ensuring self-care remains a cornerstone of healing in Altadena.

Despite the profound loss of his home to the Eaton Fire, Jayson Fernandez, known as "Jayson the Barber," has emerged as a pillar of strength and resilience within the Altadena community. As a master barber with over 20 years of experience, he quickly mobilized to uplift wildfire survivors by offering free haircuts at local donation centers and community events.

The Eaton Fire, which ignited on January 7, 2025, in Eaton Canyon, has been one of the most devastating wildfires in California's history. As of January 26, it has burned approximately 14,021 acres, destroyed 9,418 structures, and resulted in 17 fatalities.

An Altadena native, Fernandez recalls the rich history of his neighborhood and the various barbershops that served as safe spaces for the vibrant Black community. His deep connection and family ties fueled his desire to support the people who poured into him, regardless of his circumstances.

Through compassion and selflessness, Fernandez committed to providing free haircuts immediately after the Eaton Fire. "I initially started volunteering, just going to the sites, passing out waters and food; then the opportunity came to do haircuts," he recalls. "[The community is] going through a lot right now, so you know, a cut is going to help them out; it's therapeutic."

Hair care is self-care, and its healing powers can relax the mind, restore confidence, and brighten the darkest of days. Fernandez recognized that self-care was exactly what Altadena residents needed to heal and stepped in to fill the gap, pouring his heart and barbering skills into the community he treasures.

Not only were homes destroyed in the fire, but several beloved small businesses were also consumed, including Darrin Lyons' barbershop, Tangles & Locks. Lyons' establishment was known as a gathering spot where locals shared stories, fostered relationships, and built community bonds. The loss of Tangles & Locks left a void in the community, displacing barbers and leaving families without access to self-care services.

Through every haircut he provides, Fernandez aims to inspire hope in his neighbors, clients, family, and friends. In a time of overwhelming grief and restoration, he urges everyone affected by the California wildfires, including himself, to choose happiness.

"Look at the bright side of things," he emphasizes. "Find whatever you can, whatever reason you can find to be happy, and just hold on to that."

Fernandez is not only offering free haircuts but is also actively co-organizing events and collaborating with local small businesses to promote community-wide relief efforts. He believes that the people of Altadena must come together to overcome these adversities. His goal is for his hometown to rebuild not just its physical structures but also the tight-knit community that is central to its identity.

"Dena, we love you," Fernandez exclaims. "We're going to get through this together."

To support this inspiring community hero and his vital work, a GoFundMe has been established, with contributions going directly to help restore his home.
