Mets Wilmer Flores Cries During Reported Mid-Game Trade
Imagine the whirlwind of emotions experienced, finding out you've been traded in the middle of the game, crying, and still having to play...only to find out that it was all a false alarm?
That was reality for New York Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores on Wednesday night. During the eighth inning of the game, Flores was crying after allegedly learning about a trade report that had the Mets sending him and pitcher Zack Wheeler to Milwaukee for the Brewers' centerfielder Carlos Gomez.
The alleged news hit the 23-year-old Flores hard, as he visibly seemed shaken up, but still had to finish playing in the game for the Mets, which they lost 7-3 to the San Diego Padres. But the surreal scene ended with Flores staying a member of the Mets, as it turned out that there wasn't any deal.
“Someone came to me and said, ‘Wilmer’s crying,’” Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters, sharing a dugout conversation during the game, as reported by the New York Times. "I said, ‘Why?’ Well, he got traded. 'To who? For what?'
“I really think if all those things were a done deal, [the Mets' front office] would have called me and said, ‘Take him out of the game,'" Collins added.
Wipe away those tears, Wilmer.
