10 Defining Moments From 'The Breakfast Club'

Today, we're celebrating the show's 100th BET episode by taking a stroll down memory lane!

On December 6, 2010, Angela Yee, DJ Envy and Charlamagne tha God launched The Breakfast Club for the first time. The unlikely trio cemented the edgy radio show’s place in pop culture history as one of the most popular radio shows ever. Throughout the years, we’ve seen rappers, singers, actors, activists, and politicians contribute to chaotic interviews, informative interviews, and straight-up entertaining conversations that have contributed to broader conversations about various topics.

On April 17, 2023, the show found an additional home on BET, where fans can watch a condensed version every morning. As the show celebrates 100 BET episodes in the can, we’re looking back at ten of the most defining moments in the show’s history.

  • Birdman’s Rage

In April ‘16, Birdman single-handedly delivered one of the most defining moments in The Breakfast Club’s history.  He walked on to the show upset because they were, in his words, “playing with his name.” Not only would he not answer any questions, but he kept repeating that all three of them needed to stop playing with him and put some respeck on his name. In what was also probably the shortest interview in The Breakfast Club’s history — under three minutes, to be exact — Birdman delivered quotables, drama, memes, and one of the greatest interviews that never was. It’s still unclear why he was upset with them, but it may be that Charlamagne said some things he didn’t like about his business practices, but Angela Yee and DJ Envy caught the strays due to their affiliation. In fairness,  Birdman did apologize to the trio for his conduct, but it’s a moment worth revisiting from time to time because it was epic.

  • Claudia Jordan Addresses Nene Leakes

The Breakfast Club has been rotating a variety of guest co-hosts since earlier this year. Claudia Jordan has been one of those dynamic co-hosts; she comes with entertaining stories and experience. For example, remember when Claudia was briefly on Real Housewives of Atlanta and she went at it with Nene Leakes? Nene is a strong contender but Claudia held her own, and even Nene had to admit that. In an interview with Carlos King, Nene gave Claudia her props. It was in a backhanded way, but it was still undeniable that Nene acknowledged that Claudia was a tough contender. In return, Claudia addressed Nene’s commentary maturely. Ultimately, there was no harm, no foul. But Claudia let us know that she can roast with the best of them due to her history in comedy. This is the stuff we’ve been learning about the different co-hosts and their backgrounds that has kept this new iteration of The Breakfast Club, without Angela Yee, interesting.

  • Patti LaBelle Cooks

Everyone knows that Aunt Patti be cooking-cooking, but there was something heartwarming — and genius — about Patti guiding Charlamagne as he made pancakes for the crew with her line of products.

  • Soulja Boy The First

Soulja Boy stopped by The Breakfast Club to remind everyone that he did everything first, and he especially had a bone to pick with — wait for it — Draaaaake. According to Soulja Boy, Drake copied his flow. That might be debatable, but one undeniable thing is that, like the Birdman interview, this interview has been the gift that keeps on giving.

  • Ben Crump Fights The Good Fight

Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump stopped by with Arian Simone and Ayanna Parsons, founders of the Fearless Fund, to discuss a lawsuit they’re facing. The Fearless Fund is an organization that raises capital for Black and BIPOC women business owners, and it’s being sued by the same conservative think tank that helped to dismantle affirmative action. The plaintiff's claim that the Fearless Gund is being discriminatory. However, less than 1% of venture capital goes to Black women business owners. This fight is deeper than what it may seem on the surface, so it was good to hear from Ben Crump, Arian Simone, and Ayanna Parsons about the case and how they plan to continue addressing business inequities.

  • Jay-Z Lifts the Veil

Jay-Z rarely gives interviews, so the fact that he decided to visit The Breakfast Club was a big deal. In the interview, he got candid about a lot of things. He revealed that he makes his artists go through money management training, that he didn’t sign Lil Wayne because he got a legal letter from Birdman prohibiting the deal, that he actually liked the Yeezus album and more.

  • Ray J’s Shenanigans

Ray J has been on The Breakfast Club several times. Sometimes solo, and sometimes with his wife, and you can always count on being entertained. On his most recent visit several months ago, Charlamagne and DJ Envy brought up old stuff in the best way possible. They quizzed Ray J on his favorite shenanigans, like beefing with Fabolous on air, ranting about Rolls Royces, and more.

  • Stevie Wonder Serenades Hillary Clinton

The Breakfast Club’s impact and reach were solidified once politicians started to appear on the show. It became one of the stops they’d make to reach certain demographics who are likely younger and typically don’t engage in politics. Hillary Clinton did that when she was on her ill-fated 2020 election campaign run. The interview took a fortunate turn when Stevie Wonder made an impromptu appearance and then serenaded her with a birthday song.

  • Nia Long Checks Charlamagne’s Misogyny

Charlamagne tha God has come a long way, but there was a time when he used to say any crass thing that came to mind, especially regarding women. One of his favorite things to do when it came to beautiful women of a certain age was to refer to them as “vintage vagina.” He got away with it a lot until he finally met the right one. That would be Nia Long. You could tell that Charla was in love by the way he looked at Nia Long, but she drew the line when he made the “vintage vagina” pass at her. She kept it classy, too, and Charlamagne never used that phrase again from that moment on.

  • Nicki Calls Out The Lack of Research

Nicki stopped by to promote her album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and she went in on them for not being as prepared to talk about her music as they probably should have been. She kept it cute while holding them accountable, and it didn’t seem like any love was lost.

  • Ed Sheeran Turns The Tables

Ed Sheeran was once an unlikely guest for The Breakfast Club, but obviously, times change. As The Breakfast Club expanded its reach, more guests came through. Ed Sheeran stopped by and showed that he watched the show and turned the tables on Charlamagne by using his own expressions against him. For example, he asked Charlamagne if he ever sucked a fart out of a celeb’s butt and then turned it up a notch with, “Who’s Donkey of the Day today?” The latter moment became a signature part of the Donkey of Day intro.

  • Method Man Names Greatest Rap Crews

With Hip-Hop 50 in full swing, it makes sense that Method Man would be one of the guests to stop by to drop some gems. The rapper and actor talked about his health journey and being on the cover of Men’s Health Magazine. Charla and DJ Envy also got him to name-drop some of the greatest rap crews in response to BET’s list. When it boiled down to Wu-Tang and Death Row, he was confused by the pairing because Death Row is more of a label than a crew but ultimately, he kept it humble and stated that he was honored to have the comparison, especially since he looked up to Death Row when he was on the come up with Wu.

  • DMX Remixes Christmas

DMX (rest in peace) stopped by The Breakfast Club in 2013 and delivered an impromptu reimagining of “Rudolph the Red Nosed-Reindeer,” with a hip-hop edge and the DMX adlibs we love. It’s better than the original (do not debate this) and still a Christmas staple.

  • Juicy J’s New Era

Juicy J stopped by to discuss his forthcoming memoir, Chronicles of the Juice Man: A Memoir. Juicy J is an OG, so he talked about his evolution in music, the development of the Three 6 Mafia sound, and how he was in a dark place, struggling with alcoholism and substance abuse, but managed to escape that. He also revealed that when he’s a bit older, he plans to run for public office in his hometown, Memphis, because he hopes to make a difference in the lives of youth.

  • Tyrese’s Truce Goes Left

Tyrese has had a contentious history with The Breakfast Club and, over the years, felt like DJ Envy and Charlamagne didn’t support him and made light of his mental illness. He returned to the show recently and seemingly made amends. The interview review started off well, and the conversations were mature. And DJ Envy even mentioned that Tyrese helped him save his marriage. It seemed like things were on the up and up at first, and they would all move past the tension. However, Tyrese mentioned that DJ Envy didn’t return the same level of support throughout the years, and everything went downhill. There might not be any returning from this one this time, but you never know. However, this is a testament to how you never know what will happen in a Breakfast Club interview.
