Coolio’s Son Shares New Details On Cause Of His Father’s Death
Coolio oldest son Artis Ivey III is speaking out for the first time since his fathers sudden death on September 28.
In an interview with The U.S. Sun, Ivey opened up about his father’s health challenges: “My dad was having a couple of health complications. He was taking care of those things. A lot was going on with asthma, real bad asthma.”
He also revealed Coolio, born Artis Leon Ivey Jr., was “for the most part drug-free” and drug use was not involved in his passing. “He died of natural causes. He just had a heart attack,” he son explained.
“[Although] It was a complete shock. At the same time, you know, our father always prepared us for things that might happen. My father was a very spiritual person. He didn’t fear death at all. It was another step to paradise. He had his own set of beliefs. He believed in a higher power and he believed in himself.”
According to The Daily Mail, his partner of ten years, Mimi Ivey, said that Coolio had instructed his family not to have an elaborate funeral service but rather cremation instead. The rapper’s ashes will be distributed to his heirs inside exclusive necklaces. Each necklace will be inscribed with an individual message from Coolio. Once the mementos are filled, his remaining ashes will be kept in an urn. His children include Artisha, Brandi, Jackie, and Artis from his ex-wife Josefa Salinas, Grtis, Milan, Darius, Zhaneand and twins Kate and Sha.
Coolio hit it big with the 1995 hit “Gangsta’s Paradise” for the soundtrack of the film Dangerous Minds. The song stayed at No. 1 for three weeks, and earned him a Grammy, American Music Award and two MTV Video Music Awards.
