Keke Palmer Calls Nude Photo Leak Scandal 'Devastating'
When a long list of female celebrities were targeted in a massive nude photo leak last fall, some of them publicly denounced the hackers straightaway while others chose to stay quiet on the subject. Keke Palmer, who was one of the victims, never spoke on the incident until a recent visit to Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, during which she finally addressed the scandal.
“The main thing that upset me about it is that why do you want me to explain something that had nothing to do with you? People be on the Internet like, ‘Oh I found out something about you.’ Why are you happy about that?” she said.
“Honestly, if you went and took a picture of somebody through their window in their house, you a peeping Tom. You should go to jail, but because we’re on the Internet, this makes sense and this is something to be laughing and making fun about? You just have to take it in stride. There’s no way to move forward from that. You just say, ‘You know what, they don’t know any better. They didn’t mean any harm. They don’t know any better from that.' It is a devastating feeling because there is nothing you can say. You just let it go because what can you do? Write a whole long post on Instagram? Who cares about that? That won’t make you feel better. But it does suck. It sucks anytime someone finds out something that you didn’t tell them.”
Palmer also talked about what her childhood was like and the sacrifices she had to make as the main “breadwinner” in her family. The 21-year-old actress rose to fame after impressing in her titular role for 2006’s Akeelah and the Bee and has since appeared in a growing list of projects, including Madea’s Family Reunion, Ice Age: Continental Drift, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne and in January 2015, she finished her stint as the first Black Cinderella on Broadway.
“I grew up in a home where I was the financial breadwinner. Imagine what that dynamic was like. I made so much money that there was no reason for my parents to work, so that shifts the family dynamic. Or the fact I gave up my entire childhood to be an actor. Yeah, I got something wonderful in return, but imagine what that felt like when I’m filming a movie and I can’t see any of my friends and most of my films is with adults. My real point is to say, everyone has a struggle in a different form.”
