Woman Shot In NYC Subway Attack Sues Gun Maker

Ilene Steur was one of 10 people shot.

Ilene Steur, 49, was shot during the New York City subway attack on April 12 and she is now suing the manufacturer of the gun that was used in her attack.

According to The New York Times, the federal lawsuit accuses Glock of wrongly marketing their firearms that “promotes concealment” and allows a user “to inflict unparalleled civilian carnage.” Steur’s lawsuit also stated Glock, which is located in Austria, failed to “adopt the most basic policies and practices” to prevent their guns from getting into the wrong hands.

Mark D. Shirian, an attorney for Steur, said in a statement, “Gun manufacturers do not live in a bubble.. They are aware that their marketing strategies are empowering purchasers with ill intent and endangering the lives of innocent people. This lawsuit seeks to hold the gun industry accountable.”

Steur is still recovering from injuries to her buttock and says she has suffered “physically, mentally and emotionally.”

Frank James was arrested in Manhattan, more than 24 hours after 10 people were shot and 13 more were injured in Brooklyn. Police said James boarded a subway train in Brooklyn, and ignited two smoke bombs in the crowded subway car. As the train pulled into a hub station in the Sunset Park neighborhood, James pulled out a Glock 17 9mm pistol and fired 33 shots, which struck ten people. Another 13 were injured from smoke inhalation or from trying to escape. James was unable to fire more shots because his gun malfunctioned and jammed. According to ABC News, he was charged in a criminal complaint with committing a terrorist act on mass transportation and was transferred to federal custody. If convicted, James faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

There were no life threatening injuries from the shooting, according to NYPD officials, as all of the victims are expected to recover.
