Pharrell's Vivienne Westwood Hat to Be Displayed at Newseum
Pharrell fans who loved (or made fun of) his Vivienne Westwood Buffalo hat, which caused quite a stir earlier this year, will soon be able to view the piece in person. Washington, D.C.'s Newseum has acquired the hat from Arby's, which bought the hat from Pharrell for $44,100 when he put it up for auction in March. The money raised will go toward the singer's From One Hand to Another Foundation.
Arby's famously tweeted at the musician during the Grammy Awards, saying they'd like their hat back, a nod to the restaurant's logo.
The Newseum's description for the hat exhibition notes: "The original Arby's tweet ('Hey @Pharrell, can we have our hat back?') was retweeted more than 80,000 times, and Pharrell's good-natured Twitter reply — 'Y'all tryna start a roast beef?' — helped the hat go viral. The story caught the attention of traditional media outlets, whose reports on the music awards ceremony the next day frequently mentioned Arby's and the hat. The newsmaking hat demonstrated the power of social media to connect people around the globe to events in real time."
The funky hat will be on display in the Newseum's New York Times Great Hall of News from Aug. 21 to Oct. 26.
