Tems Says She Wears Baggy Clothing to the Studio to Limit ‘Distractions’
Afrobeats star Tems is opening up about the lengths she goes to avoid unnecessary distractions while working in the studio.
In an interview earlier this month on the Flow With Korty show, the “Love Me Jeje” singer revealed that she wears baggy clothes when she records so that producers are not distracted by her physique.
“Because of my objective, which is: I just want to make music. I don’t really care about politics or anything here. I just want to learn,” she explained. “I want to be here to learn, and if me being attractive is disturbing you, it's stopping me from achieving my goal, I’m going to help you.”
“I am in my alpha mode,” she continued. “'Cause I want you to not be seduced by me. And I’m not gonna be like, ‘Oh, it’s your choice.’”
Tems acknowledged that while it may be a person’s choice if they find themselves attracted to her, she prefers to keep collaborations on a professional level and notes that “most of the time it works” because producers “can tell she’s just here to work and we work.”
Surprisingly enough, the 29-year-old admitted, “I used to not always like my body, crazy as it seems, but I just didn’t understand… a lot of things.”
Tems is among several female artists who have voiced concerns about the frequently toxic environment in the male-dominated music industry. The singer received tons of support from fans, both men and women, in the comments section of blog sites who felt saddened by her experience.
“The fact she has to do this is sad. We as men have created this problem and need to fix it,” one person wrote.
Another internet user commented, “It’s so disappointing that so many women have to be responsible for the actions of men smh.”
