Solange is on the February cover of Interview magazine, and, as per usual, she looks elegant and very, very beautiful. The photos, by Mikael Jansson, are treat enough — they show Solange in pieces from designers like Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta and Balenciaga. But the real goodies come from the interview itself, which was conducted by none other than Beyoncé.

In the past year, Bey and Solange both released essential albums dedicated to Black womanhood (and they’re also full of bangers). And they clearly understand each other better than anyone else, both as sisters and artists, making for a truly intriguing piece — especially considering how rarely Bey consents to her own interviews. It’s a revealing look at two of our biggest stars.

Solange went in-depth on what it was like to grow up with Beyoncé as an older sister. “You were the most patient, loving, wonderful sister ever,” said Solange. “In the 30 years that we've been together, I think we've only really, like, butted heads ... we can count on one hand.”

Solange also talked about what it was like to grow up with women who encouraged her creativity, and how society then misinterprets that creativity. “Growing up in a household with a master class such as yourself definitely didn't hurt,” she told Beyoncé. “And, as far back as I can remember, our mother always taught us to be in control of our voice and our bodies and our work, and she showed us that through her example. If she conjured up an idea, there was not one element of that idea that she was not going to have her hand in. She was not going to hand that over to someone. And I think it's been an interesting thing to navigate, especially watching you do the same in all aspects of your work: Society labels that a control freak, an obsessive woman, or someone who has an inability to trust her team or to empower other people to do the work, which is completely untrue.”

Throughout the interview, Bey refers to Solange as a cool sister. “Growing up, you were always attracted to the most interesting fashion, music, and art,” she said. “You were obsessed with Alanis Morissette and Minnie Riperton and mixing prints with your clothes ... when you were only 10 years old.”

And yeah, Solange may always be up on the latest music and fashion and culture at large (she says it’s because she’s “on the internet too damn much”). But that doesn’t make her too cool for reality TV — she loves The Real Housewives of Atlanta. “I watch it religiously,” she said. “And I am in stitches the whole time.”
