Chicago Bears Cut Receiver Sam Hurd
The Chicago Bears placed receiver Sam Hurd on waivers Friday, the first step toward removing him from the team.
Hurd was arrested Wednesday night after meeting with an undercover agent at a Chicago restaurant where he allegedly negotiated to purchase from a supplier he believed was from North Texas. According to the complaint, Hurd wanted to purchase between 5 to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute in the Chicago area. His negotiated price was $25,000 per kilogram of cocaine and $450 per pound of marijuana.
A judge agreed to release Hurd on $100,000 cash bond Friday.
The most stunning part of the sting that got him arrested Wednesday night is that the federal complaint says the receiver, who came over from the Dallas Cowboys last summer, regularly deals large amounts of drugs.
Hurd met with an undercover agent at Morton’s Steakhouse in Chicago on Wednesday where he allegedly negotiated to purchase from a supplier he believed was from North Texas.
The investigation into Hurd began in July 2011 when he was still a member of the Cowboys, according to the ESPNchicago.com report.
Hurd signed a three-year contract with the Bears last summer worth $5.1 million, which included a $1.35 million signing bonus.
"We are aware of Sam's arrest and are continuing to gather details surrounding it," the Bears said in a statement. "We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information."
In the meantime, Hurd’s legal team is claiming their client is innocent.
"Sam intends to fight these charges, and we intend to defend him fully," high-profile defense attorney David Kenner said in a story published by ESPNchicago.com. "We have complete confidence in him."
