Betty Wright Laid To Rest Like A Queen In Miami Hometown
Betty Wright was laid to rest in her hometown of Miami, Florida over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
According to local television station Local 10, her family and close friends gathered at the Bethel Apostolic Church on Saturday (May 23) to send Wright off to her final resting place. Local 10 reported that everyone in attendance wore masks given the ongoing coronavirus crisis that continues to perpetuate throughout most of the country. Pallbearers donned black masks with a picture of Wright with the words “The Life of a Legend” emblazoned on them. During the service, Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson took the podium and paid her respects.
Among those also in attendance was hip hop forefather Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, who read an eulogy, according to the Miami Herald.
“If it wasn’t for her, there would be no me,” Campbell said.
The service reportedly lasted for three hours as those gathered honored the late R&B and soul legend with hymns, sermons and words on her everlasting legacy. Afterwards, Wright was carried to her final resting place in a glass carriage pulled by two white horses.
The funeral service was live streamed via Local 10 so that fans could join the remembrance.
Earlier this month, Wright passed away on Mother’s Day, May 10 at the age of 66. Billboard confirmed that she passed at her home after a battle with cancer.
