Prosecutor Accuses R. Kelly Of ‘Horrible Crimes Against Children’ In Closing Argument
Closing arguments began Monday (Sept. 12) in R. Kelly’s federal trial in Chicago and prosecutors described him as a vicious predator who set his sights on young girls, manipulated and used his fame to take advantage of them.
According to CBS Chicago, Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Pozolo slammed the 55-year-old, as she called for the singer to be convicted by jurors. "Robert Kelly abused many girls over many years,” she said in the courtroom. “He committed horrible crimes against children…all these years later, the hidden side of Robert Kelly has come out."
Kelly, 55, is facing 13-counts of child pornography and obstruction of justice in the federal trial, which is separate from the state trial in Chicago, in which he was acquitted in 2008.
Pozolo also focused on “Jane,” a woman who testified Kelly began sexually abusing her when she was 14, "He performed degrading acts upon her for his own sick pleasure.”
“Jane” stems from the 2008 case where the singer was acquitted. In 2002, Kelly faced 21 counts of making child sexual abuse videos. Police and the FBI verified the authenticity of one recording, but a jury in 2008 could not prove that the person in the recording was a minor, and Kelly was set free.
He stands accused of arranging for “Jane” and her parents to travel overseas to prevent them from talking with the police and instructing them to lie to a grand jury about the case. “Jane,” now 37, took the stand at the current trial and testified that Kelly sexually assaulted her for years. In total, four women testified that Kelly assaulted them when they were girls.
Pozolo’s closing argument addressed his co-defendants, former manager Darrell McDavid and former assistant Milton "June" Brown. They are accused of fixing the 2008 state trial. Polzo stated McDavid and Brown sought "to cover up the fact that ... R. Kelly, the R&B superstar, is actually a sexual predator."

McDavid was the only defendant to testify, maintaining at the time he didn’t believe the accusations against the Grammy winner and insisted some accusers were caught lying. Polzo stated McDavid and Brown knew Kelly was a predator, "Robert Kelly abused many girls over many years ... and he didn't do it alone … the hidden side of Robert Kelly has come to light. The truth has come out.”
After closing arguments, Kelly’s attorney Jennifer Bonjean twice called for a mistrial because, "The presumption of innocence has been abolished for him [Kelly].” Her requests were denied. Bonjean is expected to give closing arguments today (Sept. 13), and the jury will begin deliberations.
In a strange moment, after Polzo’s closing argument, a juror, identified as a white woman, had a panic attack, according to TMZ. U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber said the juror "couldn't last another minute" and was replaced with a white man.
This is Kelly’s second trial this year. In June, he was sentenced to 30 years in New York after being convicted of racketeering and sex trafficking. He has maintained his innocence in both the New York and Chicago trials.
