Pharrell Credits Kelis as Fashion Influence
Pharrell might be reaping in success through his music and fashion ventures, but there was a time when he needed someone to encourage him to take risks with his personal style. In the September issue of British Vogue, the 40-year-old producer credited Kelis as the one who pushed him in the right direction.
"I'd just signed this girl called Kelis, and back then all I wore was Ralph Lauren's Polo, because that was the thing. And Kelis turned to me and said, 'You've got to get out of this box,'" he said. "She introduced me to Prada and Gucci. It was thanks to Kelis I discovered a life outside of monograms."
And thank goodness! Pharrell's clothing lines Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream just celebrated its 10th anniversary with plans to expand into accessories, fragrance, glasses and footwear.
The September issue of British Vogue is now on newsstands.
