The Little Mermaid raked in $68 million in 51 international markets over the weekend, but can’t find its footing in key overseas areas.
Starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, the Disney remake received great audience feedback, with a 95 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes that’s fueling the film’s momentum in all markets.
The reimagined version of the 1989 classic animation is the story of mermaid Ariel, who falls in love with human Prince Eric, played by Jonah Hauer-King. The wicked Ursula’s role is assumed by Melissa McCarthy, while Ariel’s dad, King Triton, is played by Javier Bardem. Daveed Diggs voices Sebastian, Jackson Tremblay voices Flounder and Awkwafina assumes the voice of Scuttle.
Representation was vital for the film. Bailey, 23, said that her natural hair was “super important” in the film’s creation.
"There was a time when we'd barely see locs – and now we have a Disney princess with them, which has never happened before," she told EBONY. "It was super important for me to have my natural hair in this film. I was really grateful to [director] Rob Marshall because he wanted to keep my locs. It's always important to have somebody to cosign."
